If you’re like me, as musicologists we sometimes find ourselves locked in a box musically. The concept of “Jazz-Not-Jazz,” is as you know obviously nothing new. Nonetheless, in theory it derived from craving palpable sounds off the beaten path that doesn’t necessarily fit into the mold of what I normally listen to. In closing, I’d love to accommodate all of you as music enthusiast but due to time, resources and space on this page I must eventually remove older material in order to add fresh content. Do enjoy each visit and please let us know what you think!

Nonesuch to Release Lianne La Havas’s Debut Album, “Is Your Love Big Enough?,” August 7

Lianne-la-Havas by Alex Lake
In recent months, British singer/songwriter/guitarist Lianne La Havas emerged as one of the UK’s most buzzed-about new talents, with critically acclaimed EPs, sold-out shows worldwide and nods from the likes of Bon Iver and Ryan Adams. Esquire (UK) calls her the “songbird from London who pairs honeyed vocals with delicately finger-picked acoustic guitar” and says, “Her performances have a mesmerizing effect.” La Havas’ debut album, Is Your Love Big Enough?, will be released in the US on August 7 via Nonesuch Records. The album was recorded in Brooklyn and Los Angeles last summer and produced by Matt Hales (Aqualung). (See below for the complete track listing.) She will return to Los Angeles—where she also recorded her 2011 free EP Live in LA—on Tuesday, May 22, for a headline show at Bootleg Bar. Album pre-order and US tour dates will be announced shortly. Watch the official video for the track “Lost & Found,” directed by Colin Solal Cardo, below.
Since her appearance on the BBC’s Later … with Jools Holland last fall, the excitement around Lianne has quickly spread across the UK, Europe and the US. Appearing on that same episode of Later … was Bon Iver, which quickly led to an offer for Lianne to open their December North American tour. “As soon as we saw her play it was so refreshing; somebody who could play their instrument, somebody who could use their voice, but in their own way. She is just fantastic,” Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon told Esquire (UK). -[Read more at Nonesuch]-

Kim Burrell -][- THE LOVE ALBUM -MP3- [Shanachie, 2011] -
I see a lot of people saying they’re not fond of this album because it’s too jazzy or romantic. I really don’t see how fans of Kim can say anything she does is “too jazzy”. Jazz IS Kim Burrell, and always has been. Songs like I’ll Keep Holding On, Seeing Over, Happy, Anything, and I Come to you More Than I Give are proof of that. The only difference between this album and Kim’s previous albums is she covers ALL aspects of love. Not JUST the churchy delivery of the story of God/Jesus’ love. Like it or not, human relationships and love are a part everyone’s life, including the spiritual.
It’s even spoken of in the bible, and “The Love Album” is a great representation of that. So if you guys don’t like jazz music, it’s probably not wise to buy this or any of Kim Burrell’s albums. But if you’re an open minded person, music lover, or spiritual person, this definitely an album to buy. — justabigude | Amazon Customer Review

Will Downing -][- TODAY -MP3- [Nia Music Distribution, Llc., 2012] -
Will Downing is without a doubt one of the greatest baritone singers to ever touch a microphone with his 20th project “Today” is a 4 song EP which is a continuation of the 4 song EP he did in 2011 “Yesterday”.
Personally I don’t know why this great vocalist is only putting out 4 songs maybe he has a full length project waiting to drop but until then just giving his fans something to anticipate.
I don’t know if I should be upset or just charge it to the game but for the price of $3.96 I guess I can’t be too upset since all 4 songs on both projects are BANGING!(which means Good)
Personally I would buy both projects “Today” & “Yesterday” and make one project out of it which will give you 8 songs. Either or you can’t go wrong because Will Downing voice ALONE is well worth it. –Tony Johnson | Amazon Customer Review

Pete Belasco -][- LIGHTS ON -MP3- [Pete Belasco, 2012] -
Did you like “Deeper“? Well then you are going to love this CD. When I first heard Belasco I thought it was a Marvin Gaye that I did not know. Rather it was a white singer! Prejudiced? Well just close your eyes because your mind will see a singer of a different color. Nonetheless, Belasco may well be the most satisfying soul singer out there. Just like Deeper, every song knocks it out of the park. And you certainly get your money’s worth with 14 tracks.
The only reason for 4 stars is that most of the tracks are in the same groove. But if you are this good at this one thing, then why change? Highly recommended. –HBDawg | Customer Review | Amazon

Kelli Sae -][- PURE -MP3- [Kwurk Entertainment, 2012]-
There is a number of factors that make an artist appealing. The way they carry themselves. Their ability to draw in cross-cultural crowds. The respect they have for their craft. And of course, the vocal skills they possess. Yet, sometimes there are less overt ways an artist makes an impact. Sometimes a performer has worth simply because they resonate. Singer/songwriter/producer Kelli Sae has spanned the world with acclaimed bands such as Incognito, Count Basic and most recently Philippe Saisse Acoustic Trio, taking on the role of lead singer for all three. Kelli has been honored by the industry, and is admired by the critics. Yet the most meaningful indication of Kelli’s worth is how her music makes you feel; how her song’s cut deep into your heart and soul, and give you window not only into Kelli’s world but a new perspective into your own. How they become not just songs but your songs.
On her self-titled debut album, Kelli Sae, the vocal gymnast created emotionally honest music that was deeply personal and universal in scope. With a soaring combination of craft and compassion, Kelli’s songs touched on heartache, marriage, romance, regret, redemption and a love that it tested but deeply felt. Which is to no surprise that the album sold over 6,000 copies – and is still selling – (released on her independent label OGW Entertainment) all based on her live performances and word of mouth. She does it once again, and better than ever with her second independent release, Heroine. -[Biography]-

Fatoumata Diawara -][- Kanou EP -MP3- [Nonesuch, 2011] -
Fatoumata Diawara makes her North American recording debut with the September 27, 2011, release of the digital EP Kanou on World Circuit/Nonesuch Records. Inspired by Wassoulou tradition, jazz, and blues, Diawara has created her own unique contemporary folk sound, giving a distinctly African spin to the concept of the female singer-songwriter. “Like her mentor [Oumou] Sangaré,” says the Financial Times, “Diawara combines feminist social conscience with effortless melodic charm.” The Daily Telegraph calls her “the most beguiling talent to hit the world music scene in some time.” The Kanou digital EP includes four tracks plus the video for the song “Bissa.”
Fatoumata Diawara, a sometime star of African film, draws elements of jazz and funk into a sparse contemporary folk sound—refracting the rocking rhythms and plaintive melodies of her ancestral Wassoulou tradition through an instinctive pop sensibility. At the center of the music is Diawara’s warm, affecting voice; spare, rhythmical guitar playing; and gorgeously melodic songs that draw powerfully on her own often troubled experience.
Born in Côte d’Ivoire, raised in Mali, now based in Paris, and still only 29, Diawara has had a life covering a whole gamut of contemporary African experience: fighting parental opposition to her artistic ambitions and the cultural prejudice faced by women throughout Africa, winning success as an actress in film and theater, before finding her feet in the medium she was always destined to make her own: music. -[About this Album]-

Fred Hammond -][- GOD, LOVE & ROMANCE -(MP3)- [Verity Records, 2012]
Fred Hammond has been a trailblazer throughout his 30-year career. He founded the legendary band Commissioned that brought freshly funky air to the traditional gospel world in the 1980s. Then, in the `90s, he ushered in the urban praise and worship music movement with his Radical For Christ ensemble – paving the way for artists such as Israel Houghton and Tye Tribbett. With his forthcoming 12th solo album, God, Love & Romance (Verity Gospel Music Group), Hammond continues to break new ground for the gospel genre. Disc one is a suite of love songs touching on the topics of courtship, romance and even lost love while disc two gives us the soul stirring gospel songs we’ve grown accustomed to from Hammond.
The 19-track set was inspired by Hammond’s life and by simply observing the world around him. “It’s been on my heart for about four years and I was encouraged by my good friends Pastor Mike & DeeDee Freeman (Spirit of Faith Christian Center, Temple Hills, MD) to finally do it,” Hammond says of his decision to record a collection of love songs. “A lot of times as men with Christian beliefs we don’t talk about the things that are really important to us in love relationships. I believe God uses not only my triumphs but He uses my tribulations, turmoil, and trials to help other people go through what they are going through.”
“These are my heart songs,” he says. “I sing my worship and I sing the gospel but there was something just pulling at me to sing about romantic love. “Often as Christians we don’t adequately address issues between couples. We pray, we give in the offering, tithe, we fast, and we have Bible class. You would think our relationships (in the church) should be the strongest, but 50% of all first time marriages in the church end in divorce and I believe the thread is that we don’t talk about what’s real.”
Shrouded within an Urban Adult Contemporary musical setting, Hammond gets the real talk discussion of these grown folks issues under way with devotional love songs such as “I’m In Love With You,” “You Are My Love Come True” and the jazzy “When I Come Home To You.” The melodies and chord changes emanate with a warm and familiar old school R&B flair. Hammond’s passionate tenor bends, stretches and soars with the emotional complexity and dynamism of the testament to weathering life’s storms as a couple on “Face It All,” a tune reminiscent of Major Harris’ classic 1975 R&B evergreen, “Love Won’t Let Me Wait” and Luther Vandross’ “Here and Now”.
However, these songs don’t only deal with the blissful side of love. The up-tempo jazz funk of “What Can I Say, What Can I Do?” asks for a chance to prove this couple can be more than just friends while “One More Try” is a last ditch effort to save a relationship. -[BIOGRAPHY]-
